Hey, I’m Dave.
I’m the host of Self-Employment Sidekick, and I’m building my own business in public, missteps included.
My path into self-employment started with a small church website. I went from managing a university website and freelancing on nights and weekends to running my own web design, marketing, and coaching business full time. For over a decade I’ve helped small businesses and nonprofits with website design, video and podcast production, email, SEO, and robot poetry.
In 2020 I started making videos about the less-than-fun parts of working for yourself: taxes, pricing, insurance, and paperwork. Those videos became Self-Employment Sidekick. I share what I’ve learned along the way, including what I got wrong.
Why “Sidekick”?
Because you’re the hero of your business. I’m not a guru at the top of the mountain. I’m a few steps ahead on the same trail, happy to point out the potholes. Self-employment isn’t by-yourself employment.
Today I host the show, write Sidenotes, run the Sidekick Mastermind, and help small businesses hand off their websites through Build My Business Website.
Off the clock
I live in Pennsylvania. When I’m not working, I’m playing board games, perfecting my pizza recipe, psycho-analyzing my extended family with my wife, and reading out loud (voices and all) to our three boys before bed. Pat Flynn is my spirit animal.
